Building and Fencing Materials

Using the right materials for your barn or fence project is just as important as using the correct tools. Whether you have a custom designed metal show barn, or a 100-year-old refurbished dairy barn, learning which materials to use in and around your horse barn will help you accomplish your projects with greater satisfaction.

There are several types of materials that can be used to build or repair a barn, but the oldest and most popular material has always been wood. It's the same for fencing. Most fence posts were also wood. So we will take a look at this age-old, classic material.

In the past, wood and barbed wire were about the only choices horse owners had for fencing. These days we have a wide selection of fencing materials to choose from, but unfortunately only a few are actually safe for our horses. We'll take a look at some these horse-safe fencing materials.

Corrugated steel has recently become a very popular barn material. It's no longer used just for barn roofs. Corrugated steel is now available in different rib styles and with matching accessories such as caps, corners and trims. There is also a growing range of colors to choose from.

We've already discussed fasteners such as screws, bolts and nails, but I saved the framing connectors for the this section. These connectors can help support and reinforce some of your wood joints. Especially if you live in an area that is known for high winds, like here on the Texas Gulf Coast.
